Making hay

Under a new five-year lease agreement, a local farmer nears completion of haying operations at the Tinker Aerospace Complex. “The 115 acres will be hayed up to twice a year,” said John Krupovage, Tinker’s Natural Resource manager. “The operation so far has yielded a harvest of over 300 large round bales.” “We hay late [after July 15] to comply with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act - migratory birds such as meadowlarks, dickcissels and other birds nesting these grassy areas,” he said. Additionally, instead of being mowed at our expense, the base makes a little money on the lease and the hay is used to feed livestock. Officials with 72nd Civil Engineering are committed to finding ways to maintain Tinker Aerospace Complex at no additional cost. (Air Force photo by Brion Ockenfells)
