Storm Shelters
Workers from Survive-A-Storm Shelters clean the interior of the underground storm shelters being installed on the southwest side of the base dorms. Three 10x40 underground units and one 10x40 above-ground unit have been installed and will be ready for Oklahoma’s Spring storm season. The shelters at the dorms will hold approximately 1,230 people. The Navy shelters are next on the list for installation. A giant hole is ready to be filled with two 10x40 underground units and one above-ground unit and will be located between Evans Hall and McCool Hall. Finally, groundbreaking will soon begin on the third set of shelters between Lee Hall (Visiting Quarters) and Buttler Hall and the Vanwey Dining Facility. Three underground units and one above-ground unit will be installed in that location. All storm shelters being installed have been custom designed for Tinker Air Force Base and can withstand EF5 tornado winds. (Air Force photo by Kelly White)
