Bldg. 9001 gate (15 Nov. 2013)

Q. I guess it's difficult to hire people who can think ahead. There is no consistency in the morning to know if both lanes are open or not. Often, if the second lane is manned, they forget to move the cones at the beginning of the S-curves. It makes the guard look pretty moronic waiting there for traffic when no one can travel down that lane, especially when traffic is backed up to 74th Street. More often than not, the second lane is never open for use. I guess when things are tight you are limited in your choices of who you can use. It just seems to get worse as time goes on.

A:Thank you for expressing your concerns. We apologize for your inconvenience. All Security Forces members working at the Installation Gates are processing vehicles using our required Standards of Work to allow entry on to the installation. Both lanes are open during peak hours, but officers use their own discretion the rest of the time.
For example, if four vehicles are waiting with more approaching, the officers could choose to open the second lane.  We will highlight this issue at our upcoming Guard Mounts.  Again, we apologize if this adversely impacted your travel time. Thank you, drive safely.

Security At Gates (08 Nov. 2013)

Q:Sir, when I entered the gate this morning there was only a single guard on the gate and she appeared to be unarmed. I was concerned for her safety, and want to raise this as a potential security issue as well as a safety issue for Airmen put in this position.

A:Thank you for your concern. Rest assured that no Defender will stand at a gate alone. They will always have an over watch. Although you may not see the armed Defender, they are there ensuring the person checking identification cards is safe. In addition, one of those Defenders will always be armed. Again, thank you for your concern.
