Tinker Air Force Base and Balfour Beatty Communities hosted a community town hall meeting here on Oct. 3 to give base residents a chance to talk about privatized housing issues and have their concerns addressed.

Residents were invited to the Tinker Club for a group discussion with BBC representatives about issues they were facing. While there were some questions regarding dog parks and spraying for mosquitos, the topic of mold in housing dominated the conversation.

“The health and safety of our military and their families is our top priority,” said Col. Kenyon Bell, 72nd Air Base Wing commander. “Our commitment to the Nation’s defense will always be primal, but that mission can’t get done if service members are worried about things at home.”

Base officials have heard resident concerns and agree that there is validity to some of the claims made by a number of base residents, and that further investigation into the matter is warranted.

Steve Curtis, senior vice president of BBC came from its corporate office in Pennsylvania, along with Ty McPhillips, regional project director from the San Antonio office at Lackland AFB, Texas.

Curtis urged residents to report any issues of mold or other concerns through the work order system to get the best results. He also asked residents to give BBC time to make some “robust changes to the procedures” to assure residents that the work is being done as promised.  Moving forward, changes to customer service and maintenance programs are going to be a priority to ensure customers have a safe environment in which to raise their families.

BBC and Tinker Air Force Base officials are working together to find a long-term satisfactory solution to the mold issue.

Bell listened to everyone’s concerns and said, “I am absolutely concerned,” adding that residents should follow the established process to provide feedback regarding privatized homes.
