TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla --
Applications are now being accepted for a new Air Force Sustainment Center mentorship program designed specifically for Federal Wage System employees to develop leadership skills, foster high levels of engagement and sharpen their career vision. Both potential mentors and mentees can apply.
“There was a lot of feedback received from wage grade employees not understanding the opportunities for progression in their careers,” said Nicole Tubbs, Workforce Development Office. This 12-month structured mentoring program will help provide the foundation for personnel to reach their career goals. “It is a lot more hands-on than other programs,” she said.
Mentorship sessions will begin in October and consist of 12 sessions – individual sessions and at least two group sessions. Topics include developing career goals, using the WG Career Path Resource Site, writing a resume, interviewing, and more.
Terry Jennings, 547th Propulsion Maintenance Squadron, plans to apply to be a mentor. He hopes to help personnel identify what they would like to pursue and then give them an avenue to learn what routes are available.
“What I try to get across is that there is a difference between supervising people and leading people,” Jennings said. “The people on the shop floor actually do the job. My job is to provide the tools for them to succeed.”
Loretta Fort, Workforce Development Office, said mentors are especially needed. “It’s important for mentors to communicate to mentees they have support accomplishing their career goals so they won’t get discouraged, but be encouraged and help them make those connections,” she said.
The call for participants is open now until Aug. 13. Any Federal Wage System employee can apply to be a mentee. Federal Wage System and General Schedule personnel can apply to be mentors.
