The Air Force's combat communications groups recently underwent a major reorganization. As of Oct. 5, the 3rd and 5th Combat Communications Groups report to the new 689th Combat Communications Wing under Air Force Space Command.

Headquartered at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., the 689th CCW is the newest and third wing to join the newly-activated 24th Air Force. While the reorganization is a big deal for the combat communications groups, 3rd Herd Deputy Commander Lt. Col. David Bosko said little will change at Tinker. The associate tenant will continue fulfilling their "Anytime, Anywhere" mission with the same spirit, he said.

"The 3rd Herd is under new management, but we have the same excellence in what we do," Colonel Bosko said. "The pride that we have doesn't change neither does the ability to put communications anywhere on the planet within 72 hours."

The 689th CCW, overseen by Col. Theresa Giorlando, is a centralized communications center. Because the combat communications groups have strategic, as well as tactical capabilities, officials opted to include the units with AFSPC, which recently gained responsibility for all Air Force cyberspace operations, Colonel Bosko said.

The 24th Air Force, led by Maj. Gen. Richard Webber and headquartered at Lackland AFB, Texas, provides combat-ready forces trained to handle cyber operations within air and space operations.

Prior to the reorganization, the 3rd Herd reported to the Air Combat Command's 12th Air Force at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz. The 5th CCG reported to the 9th Air Force, also an ACC organization, at Shaw AFB, S.C.

Even though both units performed their mission, their methods of doing so differed greatly, Colonel Bosko said.

"Now that both combat communications groups are under a single wing, there will be repeatable standardized processes, similar ways we conduct business, and similar capabilities," Colonel Bosko said.

"It's easier to tap people and equipment, if you own it all," the colonel said, referring to the new wing.
