To the men and women of Air Force Materiel Command: Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you on the AFMC Team -- and your families -- for the unending support, sacrifice and hard work you devote to our command and to our country each and every day.

From the lowest ranking active-duty Airman to the most senior civilian director, everyone in this command continues to provide incredible support to our mission, which in turn supports our military and our nation. Your pride in service is amazing, your devotion to duty astounding.

Please take some time to reflect on what Veterans Day is all about. World War I, the "Great War," officially ended with the signing of the Armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of November 1918.

This event was the catalyst that led President Woodrow Wilson to declare the first commemoration of the day dedicated to recognizing our country's brave men and women who serve in all branches of the military.

Many of these men and women are no longer with us. Only a handful of World War I veterans worldwide are still living. War and hazardous duty have taken many others. There are literally millions of surviving veterans who ask for nothing in return for their service. Some have served just one enlistment, others an entire career or lifetime.

A simple word of thanks means more to most of these men and women than any certificate, ribbon or medal. Not only do I personally thank them all for their selfless service, I thank you, the men and women of Air Force Materiel Command, for your service as well. Individually and collectively you've chosen to serve a cause larger than yourself.

As we continue Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom -- and many other missions around the globe that keep our country and its citizens safe -- it's timely to take a few moments on Veterans Day to say thank you to the men and women who serve and have served so bravely, proudly and selflessly for all Americans.
