One of the biggest issues facing military members in the midst of a permanent change of station move is the damages that may occur during the shipment of their household goods.

Whether you are moving across the street or across the country there is a chance that your items may be damaged during handling. What you might not know is that your shipment is covered with full replacement value, and if you do have damages, you can file a claim entirely online.

Here are some tips to help you along the way:
· Evaluate your property before packout:

· Identify your high risk and high value items such as collectibles, baseball cards, figurines, etc. Place these items aside and ensure they are listed on inventories. Ensure your inventories are complete:
-- List valuables
-- Properly document items
-- Review all inventory sheets before signing
-- Write down exceptions
-- Obtain copies

· Consider videotaping or photographing items. This ensures you have a record of the items, as well as their condition.

· Appraise high value items such as artwork, china and furniture. Appraisals ensure the value of your items.

· Prepare your own detailed inventory.

· Carry appraisals, receipts and inventories with you.

· The claims process is done almost entirely through the Defense Personal Property System.

· If you do have damages during your move, you have 75 days from delivery to inform the moving company of damage. If a claim is filed within nine months of delivery date, the transportation service provider is required to replace any item that is lost or destroyed with a new item or pay the cost of a new item of same kind and quality.

· The TSP not required to pay for a new item if it can be repaired for less than the full replacement value of the item.

There are step-by-step guides that will walk you through the claims process available at the website www.move.mil. If you have further questions or would like more information about the claims process, visit this website.
