A doubleheader sweep of the 72nd Medical Group keeps the Swingers unbeaten in the intramural softball Monday Night League. The Swingers used timely hitting and outstanding defense to win 20-10 and 17-9 at the Tinker Sports Complex Field One July 6.

"We were looking forward to this match up. The Med Group only had one loss and they always are a tough out," said Robert Mahan, Swingers manager.

Both teams had marked this doubleheader as a pivotal one to see which team would stay atop the league standings. The Swingers were sporting an impressive 8-0 record, while the 72nd MDG was not far behind at 7-1.

The first game started off very close. The Swingers scored the first run on a single by third baseman Bud Cox, which drove in Doak Wishon.

The Med Group tied the score on a monstrous homerun over the centerfield fence by pitcher Marcus Brown.

"Pitchers do not normally hit that well," Brown joked. "I guess I got lucky."

The Swingers took advantage of their consistent and powerful hitting over the next two innings, during which time they plated 12 runs. This onslaught was led by Glen Keirstead and Mike Bryant, who went two for two with seven runs batted in between them.

The Med Group tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the third inning. They scored six runs behind the clutch hitting of Michael McCabe and Brown, who tripled and doubled, respectively, during the inning.

The Swingers finished off the Med Group with four runs in the last inning to make the final score 20-10.

"Our hitting up and down the lineup was the key to the victory," said Mahan.

The second game was more one-sided than the first. The Swingers got their bats going early, scoring eight runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The hit parade was led by Keirstead, Wishon and Travis Moore. Each had a hit and two RBIs to led the attack.

The score remained 8-0 until the top of the third inning when the Med Group bats ignited. The spark came from McCabe and Brown. They each hit doubles and plated five runners between them to shrink the lead to 8-5.

The Swingers took advantage again by outscoring the Med Group nine to four over the next two innings to capture the game 17-9.

The big hit came in the fourth inning as Wishon connected on a towering three-run homer over the right field fence.

"Our opponents were the toughest we have faced all year," Mahan said. "We had all of our players back and this team is starting to round into form."

The victory moves the Swingers record to 10-0, while the loss drops the Med Group to 7-3.
