7/19/2011 - TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Are you ready for some softball? At 1 p.m. July 22, the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will take on Tinker senior leaders on Championship Field at the base softball complex.
The event is part of the WWAST tour and will be the second game of a doubleheader for the team. Earlier in the day, WWAST will pin themselves against the U.S. Men's Softball Team at the American Softball Association Hall of Fame Field in northeast Oklahoma City.
WWAST is a team of young veterans and active duty servicemembers who have lost limbs post-9/11, while serving their country. Comprised of individuals with a variety of amputations, they are all active, athletic and competitive players who have high school or college baseball or softball experience, and whose abilities offer a variety of strengths to cover all the team positions.
"It's not unusual on this team to see a batter slide into second base stretching a single into a double, and then ask the umpire for time while he removes his prosthetic leg and shakes out the dirt accumulated there" says their coach, David Van Sleet.
The goal of WWAST is to "raise awareness through exhibition and celebrity softball games, the sacrifices and resilience of our military and highlight their ability to rise above any challenge ... and perform the sport they love."
Bring water, sunscreen and your loudest cheering pants to welcome Wounded Warriors to the base and root for on your favorite Tinker senior leader. There is no charge for the event and free hot dogs and watermelon will be available.
